[bomp] re: New bands (was re: Vines: Garage?)
Borders' listening stations, glossy magazines and cable TV programs
can have all the White Stripes, Vines and Hives they want. (The
Strokes also leave me cold, while the Subsonics inspire me to pick up
the guitar.) Below are my favorite 2002 releases--so far and in no
particular order. (Some were released in 2001, but I did not hear 'til
2002.) WFMU has definitely helped in introducing me to some exciting
new music this year.
The Resonars-"Lunar Kit"
The Sights-"Are You Green?"
KO and the Knockouts-"S/T"
The Beards-"Funtown"
Baby Lemonade-"High Life Suite"
Detroit Cobras-"Life, Love and Leaving" (still like their debut the
best)
Palomar-"II"
The Lost Patrol-"Scattered, Smothered and Covered'
All Girl Summer Fun Band "S/T"
Dressy Bessy "SoundGoRound"
Mama Guitar-songs from "In Mama Guitar Style" (Japan)
Kent 3-"Spells"
The Killer's Kiss 4 song EP
The Queers-"Pleasant Screams"
Duvall-Standing at the Door EP
Minus 5/Young Fresh Fellows-"Let the War Against Music Begin"
(McCaughey really gets down that '70s Beach Boys quirky vibe on the
Minus 5 side)
The Rants-"Get back into It"
Honorable Mentions:
The Possibilities-"Way Out"
The Deathray Davies-"The Day of the Ray"
The Mooney Suzuki-"Electric Sweat" (although it sounds a little
contrived and like Urge Overkill
in some moments and does not have the urgency of their debut)
Weezer* "Maladroit" and "Summer 2002 demos" (*my guilty CD-R
pleasure-the fluid demos are so much better than most everything on
the current album)
New-ish Albums I want to hear:
Green-"Eau de Vie"
The Sights-"Got What We Want"
Denise James
The Coral
Chargers Street Gang
The Woggles live
Looking forward to new full-lengths in the future/fall from:
The Aislers Set
The Last
Freddy and the Four-Gone Conclusions
The Cynics
Outrageous Cherry
The Now People
Ted L.
