You're not missing much. Though the Times may be more politically 'correct' (in an
unironic way), its editorials are still written with a stiff, leaden style that gets
downright insufferable at times. As far as the op page, Maureen Dowd hasn't had a
decent column since Bill Clinton left the White House, William Safire is still a
great reporter when he wants to be but much of his opinion writing is boorish and
Thomas Friedman is overly pretentious. Only Frank Rich has a spark of life in his
writing, but his column is only once a week and I frequently miss it. The page is
still worth reading for the guest editorials, but the staff needs a shakeup.
Apologies for the detour, but it's a holiday (in the U.S.).
