This has been debated many times in the past year, Rob. It seems like
it comes up every month lately. Some of us love all of them, some (like me)
love some of them, others like one or two, others dislike them all, and some
just couldn't give a crap.

Well, I'd disagree there. First of all, I'd be surprised if you really
meant "nobody". Secondly, I'm pretty sure you've been on this list for a
long time. As such, if you look back in the archives, you'll see that The
Hives and The White Stripes - to name two of the bands in question - have
actually been mentioned on this list for a couple years.
You may well mean "the public at large won't care." Perhaps, but I
really don't care. These bands have given me true pleasure in the past
couple years. Even if both The White Stripes and The Hives never made
another record, I'd still go seem them again because I really enjoyed their
live shows and I like their songs. Also, the way I see it, because of the
success they've already had, they can probably play decent-sized venues for
years to come and get an audience. That's happened countless times for
other bands in the past.

I'm sure someone else will mention this before I do, but I can't help
but ask, "Are you talking about your Stones/Beatles/Who/Kinks records?" Or
are you talking about The Sonics, The Creation (who few here in the US ever
even heard of in the 60s), We The People, The Fantastic Dee Jays, etc.?
'Cuz as much as I love the aforementioned bands, I have a hard time
believing any of them ever sold a few hundred thousand copies of any of
their records. Now, sales don't make a record worth hearing, but it
certainly means that they've had some impact. And while that's no guarantee
of a lasting impression, it certainly gives it a better shot.

I have no problem with nostalgia, but I'm glad I like new bands for a
different reason: I love live rock'n'roll. As much as I love records, live
rock'n'roll is far more exciting to me. If all I was into was 60s bands,
I'd be missing out on this. This is not to say that The White Stripes, The
Hives, etc. are all there is to see out there. Many of us have been seeing
great bands in clubs for a long time. However, it's quite exciting to me to
see bands I like getting recognition. It also increases the chances of kids
picking up guitars and creating their own cool rock'n'roll.

Well said. (Although by "burnt out", I'm hoping Jonny only means in
terms of the public ear. I'd say these bands will probably be playing for
years to come, even if they aren't popular. I sure hope so.)

I've seen them a couple times and they've done a pretty good show. As
to the new record, Jahna and I listened to it in the car on our way to IKEA
yesterday. (We turned around and came home when we got to the exchanges
line and picked up ticket 738 when they were serving in the low 600s.) The
songs just didn't appeal to us. I'll probably listen to it a few more times
just to give it a fair shake - after all, it's a review copy and I *will*
get TS 61 (codename: Albatross) out eventually - but the first taste sure
isn't a good one. Still, I occasionally change my mind after a few listens.
Anyway, we took it off and put on a Matthew "Tweekid" Kaplan CD-R comp of
80s garage tracks. (Eventually, I'm hoping Matthew will post his
tracklistings - 'cuz he's now done about 6 volumes, of which I only have the
first.)

I think we're talking about two different kinds of crowds here, PJ.
Wowsville A-Go-Go has two distinct groups of people showing up: those that
are there specifically for the event and those that come down from upstairs
to see what's going on. The latter is a very different crowd, but many of
them really seem to enjoy the sounds. Works for me.
