[bomp] Re: The Hives, The Vines, MTV, etc.
I saw the Hives and Vines on the MTV awards show the
other night, the main reason I tuned in and recorded
it. So it was a "battle of the MTV2 bands" huh? Who
won? I don't remember there being a competition, but
I'd say the Hives came off a hell of a lot better than
the Vines, and as for them, I'm starting to tire of
all the coverage given to Craig Nicholl's drug haze
and "diet of fast food and marijuana." I like their
album a lot, but I don't agree with their (or his, as
it is) personal "politics."
The Hives are great, smoking, fast-paced rock and roll
like it should be played. While some may be put off by
Pelle Almqvist's arrogant stage manner, I find it
amusingly engaging. When he said "That's all the time
they gave us, so you can turn it off now!" I almost
did. It became a soundbite in further ads for reruns
of the special.
It was nice to see the White Stripes get an award. I
like Meg the more I see or read about her, but I'm
also tiring of Jack White's sullen "we never wanted to
be this popular" ranting. If anything, they may get
bigger before they burst.
I think most animosity there may be for all these
trendy "new garage" bands probably stems from the fact
that there've been bands like the Fleshtones,
Fuzztones, Chesterfield Kings, the Makers, and others
of their ilk who have struggled through the club scene
to no national acclaim, then all of a sudden, these
20-something bands who came out of nowhere are getting
the covers of the magazines and all the rewards of
fame, after relative months of buildup. It would be
sickening to me if I were in one of the "old-guard"
bands playing 5 dollar gigs in bars. But as a fan of
good old rock and roll, I'm well-pleased...
