[bomp] The Argument's Off-Bass

>somebody was responding to complaints about the lack of bass
>on some reish or another (Stones? Replacements? I forget now), adding that
>it
>doesn't get in the way of digging blues records, so why should it matter on
>a
>rock record?

Actually, it was the lack of bass in the White Stripes.

>Nothing against bassists, but that's why those guitarists were so
>good...because they HAD NO BASS and had to do something to cover up!

I wouldn't say that about Jack White.

>Then along came Perry:
>"You gotta be kidding me? Someone's nostalgic for acoustic blues?"

I was ribbing the blues fan, Ciaran, because he had said the same thing about
mono.

>Perry then added: "Recording techniques progress, instrumentation
>progresses..."

I was saying that mono was outdated and so was acoustic blues.

But let me quote that NY Times article about Redd Blood Cells that Blair sent
us a while back:

>Musos don't listen to
> music the way you and I do. When they hear the Detroit duo
> the White Stripes - with Jack White on guitar and his
> former wife, Meg White, on drums - they don't hear raw,
> bluesy stomps that announce the return of quality rock to
> mainstream ears. No, they hear a band that is missing a
> bass player. And they find this incredibly irritating and
> aesthetically wrongheaded.

Guess I'm a muso.
