Re: [bomp] Untalented 80's bands

I always thought the mid eighties, not unlike the early seventies went through a rash of inspid one-hit wonders; those groups whose only claim to fame were really not that good. A one hit wonder, could be the "first squeeze of the grape", the best song the band has and that's it (ie Count IV and Syndicate Of Sound). A great tune, but the best was not yet to come.

MTV was clearly the stage for these groups as the record companies learned, designed and produced for this medium; very quickly. Untalented bands hit like monsoon because of the look. Hair/heavy metal, Techo, Prince/Funk, Euro, Quirky British (Dexy's, Seagulls). I am not even touching the MOR stuff! But many of them lacked any real talent. The first squeeze of the grape and after that the wine got pretty damn bitter.

I watched very closely (having been a Radio DJ, in bands and having the opportunity to judge Rock and Roll Rumbles for WFNX here in Boston); and these groups came out of the wood work, as soon as the punk movement imploded.

As for bands from the eighties that I still listen to:

The Cure
Squeeze
XTC
Gang Of Four
Ramones (god how I wished they were from Boston, it would have made October 86 much more tolerable.)
Heaven 17
Devo
Mighty Lemon Drops
Cramps
Blondie
...and the countles garage bands that took hold in the "garage revival" of the mid-80's

Don't bother to flame, my ego is far too large.

Oh yeah....thee Wytches "legacy" has evolved with the up comming release "Chronicles of Bayerleigh". A pop/psych concept masterstroke done on a 300 dollar budget, a vintage bong, and ex-local opera singer, a guy who could play a harpsichord and borrowed electric sitar.

The results ill spent dotcom severance and two layoffs.

Remeber folks....IT'S JUST A JOKE!!!!!

Hope everyone had a great New Year eve and that the hangovers pass quickly.
