Spent New Year's Eve at the Middle East. After having disappointed me with
their other reunions, The Prime Movers in their 20th Anniversary set were
tremendous. One of the very best bands of the 80s
(garage-mod-punk-pop-fast-melodic rock'n'roll), whose recordings never did
them justice, they did mostly songs from the earlier, better half of their
career, including some they have hardly performed since (like their hit "Come
To Where It's At"). It was the original members except they had an anonymous
keyboardist at the side of the stage. They played as tight as if they had been
rehearsing all these years. Dick the guitarist's hair is short and bleached
blonde but otherwise they look about the same, too.

    The Prime Movers are playing Wednesday January 8th at the Abbey Lounge. I
strongly recommend seeing them, as their amazing Keith Moon-channeling drummer
Dennis McCarthy will be going back to California and they won't have any more
reunions for quite a while.
