Sorry to beat a dead horse, so to speak, but there are some who feel that the Clash were reactionary and formalistic, especially compared to the Pistols. That is to say, the Clash represented a return to "real" i.e., ernest and natural-sounding rock, vs. the punks who wanted to destroy all music, especially rock. This was the real stylistic influence of the Clash for early U2 (as earlier mentioned). I don't expect many on this board to agree, but there are people more on the arty side of punk who think so.
