[bomp] Everybody Raise A Glass For A Toast...
Here's to Maurice Gibb. God bless him.
And here's to the Bee Gees...an excellent band that knew they were one of the
most put-down bands of all time, but continued to do things their way anyway!
I admit that when I was in fourth grade, 1978, when they were selling
millions of records but were considered the epitome of uncool, I was probably
hesitant to admit aloud I liked them, and I probably laughed a long when my
friends mocked 'Tragedy' or 'Staying Alive' or 'Night Fever' and the other
1977/78 hits. But the fact was, I owned every one of those singles.
(Thankfully, that insecurity eventually wore off, and I was never shy to
admit liking what I liked. Hell, I have no trouble admitting I bought a Barry
Manilow comp CD a few years ago because I like some of those songs...I don't
take it out of my CD rack and hide it when guests come over. :>)
I never got to see a Bee Gees concert, per se, but I did attend their April
2001 'Live By Request' broadcast at the Hammerstein Ballroom. My friend and I
didn't have a ticket, but we hung around outside the theater for a couple
hours in hopes the crew would let us in...and they did, and it was a
fantastic show. And I specifically remember Maurice making jokes during the
commercial breaks...when he took a drink of water from his Poland Spring
bottle, he joked about the thought of someone deciding he was going to be a
millionaire by selling water.
I will proudly play my Bee Gees CDs today. Farewell, Maurice.
