[bomp] Re: Tribute Albums

I've been watching this thread for a while and thought I'd chime in. Back
when I used to write a fanzine, I wrote a piece about tribute albums. That was
close to ten years ago give or take a year or so. Lots more stuff has come
out since then. There's a lot of hit or miss stuff out there, I'll give you
that, but I actually enjoy a lot of them. I prefer the lesser known bands and
indie labels that pop up on them, but sometimes there's a surprise here and
there on the more established labels. I do love the Sonics and Sam the Sham
tributes, as there's a whole bunch of bands that I've both listened to, seen
live, and met at one time or another, but I don't limit it to just them. Just
thinking off the top of my head:

1) Beyond the Wildwoods - A Tribute to Syd Barrett: Anybody have a copy of
the Tropicana Fishtank album to burn for me? I love the version of No Man's
Land on this.

2) Saturday Morning Cartoons - Love the Reverend Horton Heat Johnny Quest /
Stop That Pigeon

3) Johnny Thunders tribute with surviving Dolls members each doing a cut

4) There's a Van Halen tirubte that I think was done in Boston. The rule was
no note-for-note guitar solos, although there is a note for note version of
Eruption done on a church organ at some church in West Roxbury that is worth
purchasing.

5) Raspberries Preserved - Scott McCarl's version of Nobody Knows is great,
otherwise hit or miss.

6) There's a Shadows tribute that I've only seen when my buddy Joe Coughlin
brought it on our 351 mile journey to see the Dictators and Punch Drunk
Monkeys in Cortland NY. What a day, what a journey. Status Quo had a cool cut on
it, and if my memory serves me right, Peter Green even plays on a cut.

7) Roky Erickson tribute - If only ZZ Top still sounded like their version
of Reverberation. At least they're recent album sounds a bit like they did in
1973. I still like the various interpretations of the songs, especially Doug
Sahm's version of You're Gonna Miss Me. Blows the Border Wave version out of
the water. Anybody ever hear Doug's version of You Don't Know with CCR's
drummer backing him up? Intense

8) Troggs - Groin Thunder - Ace from start to finish

9) Ramonetures - Maybe not a tribute, but still, a variation of a theme,
Ramones songs done Ventures style. It works just fine.

There's tons of other stuff. The only tribute album I didn't really care for
was the Peter Green 2-CD one. Can't explain why, just didn't like it all
that much.
