RE: [bomp] Gun Club
LG are just about my favorite new band, although I think of 'em as a follow-up to the Pontiac Bros. more than to GC (whom I loved). Not only have I tracked down all the CDs [You're Always Welcome, Here, Liquor Giants, Every Other Day at a Time, Something Special For the Kids, Up With People], but have seen 'em live and they were stunning.
Dotson is like a new Ray Davies with Dave's guitar firepower.

Ward Dotson's Liquor Giants records are pretty good power pop-ish slabs. Esp. "Every Other Day" and "Something for the Kids" an all covers album with songs by the Move, Jeff Beck, Dusty Springfield and more obscure 60s songs. Even includes a 70s christian rock number and one of those "Come Back, Beatles" songs. Good stuff.

i always dug the gun clubs lack of guitar skill...to me, they sounded like they could barely play which is why dave alvin's lead work on the las vegas story was such a fun contrast. he was the perfect ringer for that record. and is it just me but that band just did not have it after the las vegas story record. todd

I've heard those records hundreds of times ("Miami" just last week) but I
still don't get those comparisons....

Doors. And I'm not sure where the Quicksilver or Television comparison
comes
from either...<<
you haven't heard those two albums, eh? i probably wouldn't have come up
with
those comparisons either, but they actually do seem to fit the music...
