[bomp] Brian's artistic progress (and submergence) over the years...
One question that sounds encouraging, though perhaps overly optimistic is:
ST: I know it's an album from 1967 originally but do you foresee a natural
follow-up to 'Smile'?
BW: Yeah, if it's successful, boom (clicks fingers) yeah we'll make another
one
If I may weigh in on this, you know, I always thought that FRIENDS was the
natural artistic follow-up to SMILE. Has the same kind of changes, oddities and
quality. I've listened to FRIENDS, for example, more than PET SOUNDS.
Then, in a logical progression, SUNFLOWER would be the next album after
FRIENDS. Then, no more Brian really until 1988. SMILEY SMILE and WILD HONEY were
just kind of bash-outs, and 20/20 was leftovers the group gave to Capitol
while the Beach Boys spent Capitol's bread on sessions that would become
SUNFLOWER, LANDLOCKED etc.
That said, maybe Brian will return with another more creative project after
this new SMILE thing comes out. But I just wish Rick Rubin would oversee the
next Brian Wilson project, because Brian's whole staff and environment now are
these M.O.R. yuppie/boomer types, and that has been guiding Brian's recent
"sound" (UGH). "Sound" that no one under the age of 55 would bother with.
