[bomp] More on NRBQ/Wax Museum
NRBQ actually played three shows there with J Sebastian opening, technically
six because they probably did two shows per night. Other acts that opened
for NRBQ there were Carl Perkins, Professor Irwin Corey, Rev Billy C Wirtz
and the best of all, Henny Youngman. All killer shows.
I also saw Fats Domino there and a bunch of other great acts. It had
actually been a wax museum... a failed tourist trap that was turned into a
huge club with many of the wax figures intact, and astronaut suits etc
hanging from the ceiling, with a stage at one end with cool sunken
ampitheater style seating. After the club closed in 84 it was interesting
to come across the wax figures here or there; I remember a record shop
bought the Louis Armstrong one and a restaurant had the Sinatra. The
property (4th&E SW) was recently redeveloped
Regarding NRBQ inventing "we'll play any request", i know they started doing
it in early 1978, I always wondered if the Tonight Show "stump the band"
started earlier than that
