I said dark-skinned, not black. Gomez was Chicano. The Italian-American was
tastefully nicknamed Salami, and the presence of a Goldstein was a cross
between comic relief and tokenism to protect the producers against the
plantation charge. The coach was very tall, very blond, very wise, very
compassionate. Benevolent plantation master is a classic theme. As in the
White Shadow.

My god, who could forget Sybil? Was she hot or what? Her role was clearly to
provide controversial sexual tension for our repressed Catholic School (they
always said from Bayside, Queens) aryan.
