[bomp] Re: Airplane

Rocky sez:

<< Agreed....JA shouldn't be lumped in with the Dead just because they both
achieved high profile status and were from the Bay Area. I'd actually
credit the Airplane for setting me back on the path towards the garage when
I started re-discovering sixties music in the mid-70's. Their versions of
"High Flying Bird" and the long, but garagey "Go To Her" rank right up as a
couple personal faves as well as almost all of the wild "After Bathing At
Baxter's" LP. Care to comment Sknoof? >>

Oh, twist my arm.

Well, we ARE talking to a wall here, of course...Domenic tends to over-react
a bit when the subject of San Francisco comes up, but he comes by that opinion
legitimately. It must have been hellish to try and wave the L.A. flag (a
pretty god-damned rich tapestry of a flag, at that) in the late 60s and early
70s. Especially after all those soft-rock/country-rock bozos started
hijacking
the entire country's perception of "L.A. Music" ethos. Ugh.

But in doing so, he (and I don't mean to pick on you personally, Domenic --
but hell, I know you) dismisses a lot of fabulous music. "Pillow" and
"Baxter's" (especially the latter) are two of my absolute favorite records.
"Baxter's" is perhaps the very best historical example of what a band at the
top of
their game can do when turned loose in the studio with unlimited cash and
unlimited time by an unsuspecting record company who thought they were gonna
get a
couple more Grace Slick hit singles.

As opposed, to be fair, to records like "Anthem of the Sun," which shows how
very AWFUL a record a band in the exact same situation can deliver...

(And BTW, I'll reiterate that I still love the first Grateful Dead album, and
anyone who doesn't consider it a garage-rock record is -- in my opinion --
listening with prejudice. You don't have to like it, but you DO have to
listen
to it with an open mind, fer chrissakes.)
