[bomp] Re: Steppenwolf

I love that album. That and "Monster" are both big favorites.
Most die-hard Steppenwolf fans don't like "Second," though. John Kay doesn't
like it either. He feels that the long suite on Side Two was a good idea
that was poorly realized. I disagree completely. I still play it all the time.
For one thing: the opening of that suite was the first time I (and most kids
my age) ever heard anything even approximating unaccompanied acoustic
slide-guitar blues. Sure, not exactly "authentic," coming as it did from a Canadian
German White Guy. But it was a start. "Beggars' Banquet" followed this LP by
a couple of weeks, as I recall. But we heard "Second" before "Beggars'."
EVERYONE bought "Second" -- because they heard the long version of "Magic Carpet
Ride" on FM radio. Whoooooooaaaa maaaannnnnn.
"28," sung by Jerry Edmonton, is a lost gem in the Steppenwolf canon. Love
it.
The only sour note, and it's still a great song, is "Tighten Up Your Wig,"
which is unabashedly stolen lock-stock-and-barrel from "Messin' With The Kid."
