[bomp] canuckle rock
growing up in that era (70s) - i just remember
the hockey rock mustaches on all these guys... yikes.... and satin pants....
the interesting thing about that era is that it was still a singles-dominated
market so singles deals were the status quo.... if you had something happening,
it was fairly easy to get a US single-only release (and vice versa)... so you
had a lot of Canuck 45s hitting the airwaves with maybe a follow up
lp... or not....
Nick Gilder's Roxy Roller was one of those singles where he was
battling himself, i think,
at one point.... Sweeney Todd (his orig band - Bryan Adams replaced
him on vocals - there is a horrendous vinyl
lp of that line up) version vs Nick Gilder version (there are
apparently 4 versions of this single, including one with Bryan Adams
on vocals)...

there was a lot of interesting stuff out of Montreal; Pagliaro,
Mashmakkan, Mahogany Rush...
the early glam canadian scene had toronto' Brutus (their best stuff
never on record, sadly), Fludd,
wackers (in montreal for a while).... this was also the era when the
club circuit was very heavy...
pre-disco, you could make a lot of money if you were a headliner....
you did 3-night residencies
and brought in your own sound & lights... that's why a lot of those
70s bands were so tight, you're
playing 3 sets a night every night of covers/originals... disco
destroyed that live scene and punk
helped bring it back (odd, some of these new punk bands today are
wearing satin pants-like pants).....altho you still had to lug sound
& lights around.... i remember my nights as Diodes lightman
fondly.... tho the crappy band rooms less so.... oh well....
nothing's really changed when i tour now on my own....hahaha....
