One to the strongest arguments for CD's is that they are digital. And as such can be transfered from one media to another without serious degradation. If it hasn't happened yet, I see CD's being replaced by flash memory, small EPROM chips playable on various components (PC, home theater) and as a such easy to bounce your CD's to since the data is digital. With good error correction, rip the CD to memory, disk, DAT without the loss that you would find when dubbing from vinyl or tape.
In addition, there is no physical contact when reading from CD, memory or disk. A CD that I bought twenty years ago, still sounds better than an album I played for twenty years.
As for the sound quality, I am experiencing hearing loss at an alarming rate so plead no contest.
