The "underground" influence must have worked, 
because  Hayes played one of the Fillmores right behind the HOT BUTTERED SOUL 
elpee.

Yeh, this I recall... but as the years wore on, it was less, and less.  I 
remember SHAFT getting a little airplay on F.M. but when it broke on A.M. they 
dropped it.  To me, "Theme from Shaft" and "What's Goin' On" was pickin' up on 
what Brian Wilson was tryin' with "Good Vibrations" when he initially was 
shootin' for an R&B track.  The ethereal production got in there by '71 with actual 
Soul hits.
