[bomp] Re: Spinal Tap/A Mighty Wind
<<< But, hey, did anyone notice already that in the clip where it's supposed
to be 1967 they're playing a 1980s drum kit? >>>
Funny you mention that, as just last night I was watching a borrowed copy of
the DVD of 'A Mighty Wind,' and before watching the movie itself I sampled the
extras. Said extras include a few complete versions of TV appearances we see
only portions of in the film...And one, not used in the final film, is
supposed to be a 1968 TV appearance of The Folksmen, having "updated" their
sound/look, wearing longer hair and playing electric guitars (though Harry Shearer's
character still plays an upright bass) and singing your typical late 1960s song
about the youth of today that sounds like it was written by someone outside
the circle...and it also sounds like a typical old-folkies try to catch up song.
To that end, it's well-done...But the clip itself, adorned with large lava
lamps (actually large lava lamp shaped things with colored balloons inside...you
don't have to look too hard to see the strings) and "psychedelic" color
changes and dissolves...doesn't look very convincing....whereas the 'Listen To The
Flower People,' drumkit aside, I thought was very well done. I've seen that
clip in its raw form, ie, complete and in videotape form rather than film, and
it looks like it was actually shot on the type of 2 inch color videotape that
existed in 1967, which adds to its more authentic look...of course, 1967
videotape and equipment was probably a little easier to get a hold of in the early
1980s than it was in 2002. ('Gimme Some Money' was also shot on color
videotape, but was blackandwhitified and kinescoped for the film). The 1968 Folksmen
clip looked like it was shot with today's technology...the end result looked
like it could have been an episode of a current TV show where one of them has a
dream he's in the 1960s in a band.
