he's just nuts.  when he plays live now you're treated to a lengthy version
of peter gunn, sometimes more than once per set.  you get a vocal rendition
of house of the rising sun, also sometimes more than once per set.  miserlou
is still great, but chances are you won't hear any of his other monster
instro tunes from the 60s.  last time i saw him he spent about 5 full
minutes mid-set talking all this crap about deforestation of the trees in
south america and whatnot, said, "this next song is about how we must take
care of our environment" -- then he plays "the victor"!

on the lawrence welk thing, there's a really funny b-side to a phantom
surfers 7" where they prank called dick dale, stroked his ego for a couple
of minutes, then asked him about his times on the lawrence welk show.  when
he said he'd never been on the lawrence welk show they said they thought
they were talking to the dick dale who was the accordian player in the
lawrence welk band.  i'm not sure if the whole thing was a hoax, but the
person sounded just like dick dale.
