Re: [bomp] [Old Guitarists Die Hard )was bomp] re: dick dale

I've seen Dale twice. The second time was much better
than the first, although both shows had too much of a
vocal element for my taste. Someone needed to tell him
way back when that he wasn't Elvis and never could be
without Presley's vocal chops. The first time suffered
from the same flaws that everyone's mentioned ; it
reminded me of nothing more than a Johnny Thunders or
Buddy Guy show (although I am unaware of Dale having
the substance abuse problems of a Thunders or a Guy).
The second time was much more tight and together. (It
may have made a difference that he was headlining the
second time, whereas the first time he was opening on
a bill which Jan and Dean headlined and the Ventures
played in the middle ) Then again, Bo Diddley had the
same problems when I saw him (twice), and that's when
he was seriously pushing a sobriety agenda in
everyone's face in the 80s - I guess right after he
got into the program. (With Bo, at least the first
time I saw him the energy level was higher and he
actually had a good guitar sound. The second time he
did mostly reggae and slow blues, the guitar sound was
terrible and the energy level was quite low)

I never saw Link Wray, but it sounds like he suffers
from that same problem.
