[bomp] Re: bomp-digest V2003 #1071 - Eddie Angel Meets Beatles/ Dick Dale
Hi Rocky,
I just got "Eddie Angel Meets the Beatles" and the latest CD by the Hi-Risers,
"That Rock & Roll Beat." I dig them both. An alternate title for the Angel CD
is "Eddie Angel and the Hi-Risers Meet the Beatles." The Hi-Risers provide the
backing for Eddie's singing and guitar playing. It's a great concept; the lads
tackle 16 songs that were part of the Beatles' early repertoire of covers, but
were never recorded in a studio. Eddie doesn't try to sing like a Beatle, but
he does a fine job and I find the whole project fun and worthwhile. The
Hi-Risers CD is yet another cool blast of clever rootsy rock and rockabilly
songs. "Chasin' Women, Catchin' Hell" is a prime example of the kind of witty
material that makes them such a great party band.
I have a Dick Dale story too. He showed up as a guest guitarist at the Deke
Dickerson Guitar Geek Festival show a couple weeks ago. Nokie Edwards
was the main attraction and played a super set with Deke and the rest of
his Ventures Mania band as the backup group. At the end of Nokie's set,
Dick was brought out. Nokie was the picture of cool, calm and collected. Dick
came on like a rampaging rhino. It was great seeing them play together,
but Dick is very overpowering. He kept giving Nokie, Deke and others the
sweeping "take it away" hand motion and then playing over their leads. A
friend of mine was backstage afterwards and witnessed the following
exchange. Dick was gushing and carrying on to Nokie, asking him what's
new, etc. After a pause in Dick's monologue, Nokie said, "I broke a rib, man."
Talk about your odd couple.
