[bomp] genius David Cross '20s skit
How many kids saw Vallee and thought "great, I love
this singer" and how many would have rather seen the Dave Clark Five?
You got that right!!! But, I don't think there was as much disdain with the
Pop era for that stuff as there was for hippies. Remember, a lot of that old
stuff was part of the Camp thing that was so popular back then.
David Cross did a great thing on MR. SHOW about some '20s guy who sang
Novelty songs about inventions. "Elevator, Elevator, goin' up and
dow-w-w-w-w-wnnnn".... hilarious skit that began with Cross in a coffee house, acting like a
record collector who hates CDs because they're not "pure" and whipping out a
crank-turntable from under his knit sweater or something like that. Then he
drifts off to that purer time, and this black 'n' white skit begins with all these
Novelty tunes, displaying the obvious commercial aspect of the time.
Of course, Robert Crumb moving all his '78s to France in that documentary
CRUMB was another example of a '60s interest in the '20s. Hilarious, him telling
the movers to be careful.
