Bruce Meyers pretty much invented the mid-60's dune
buggy craze from his shop in Costa Mesa (Orange
County, CA). His most famous buggy was the Manx, which
came in many different fiberglass colors and is pretty
much what
everybody things of when you think of those 60's
fiberglass dune buggies. They were in a lot of movies
at the time--I remember Steve McQueen driving one in
THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR, Elvis had one in LIVE A
LITTLE, LOVE A LITTLE (the unforgettable Elvis film
with the crazy girl with the big dog who lived by the
beach and the truly surreal "Edge of Reality"
sequence)>>
Ooooh, that's a late one, and one of my faves,
too--not that it's a particularly GOOD movie, but it's
funny as hell. Elvis as a womanizing fashion
photographer--the effect is like a bizarre caricature
of "Blow Up" minus the murder. The aforementioned
"Edge of Reality" is as psychelic as The King ever
got, and has me howling tearfully every time. This
movie is ALSO the source of the song, "A Little Less
Conversation," which was a hit a few years back,
thanks to an EXCELLENT remix by JXL.
