[bomp] Re: Dom book signing this Saturday Afternoon in the City

Tony Asher was the special guest! It was a pleasure to
meet Van Dyke Parks, the man who collaborated with
Brother Brian on "Pet Sounds" and catch up with
Domenic. I mentioned to Tony Asher that I also enjoyed
his work with Roger Nichols and the Small Circle of
Friends (A&M/ Rev-ola). Domenic stated that his
long-in-the-works book "Riot on Sunset Strip: Rock 'n'
Roll's Last Stand in Hollywood 1965/1966" has been
completed and is slated to be released in one of the
upcoming seasons. I forgot to ask Van Dyke Parks about
his interest in Soca/Steelband music from the
Trinidad. He produced The Esso Trinidad "Tripoli"
Steelband in 1971:

In addition, VDP's considerable contributions to the
pop canon cannot be denied:

(I didn't previously know he played keyboards on the
Byrds' "5D.")

Being in the area, I stopped by Amoeba Records to see
if they had the Barbary Coasters debut, the 3rd We
Five album and/or a particular Sebastian Temple album
from the early '60s, but ended up flipping through
Seekers albums in the folk section on a super-busy
Saturday. (Somebody had the good taste to play the
Searchers and Davie Jones-era Bowie in the store!) I
ended up getting a used edition of the recently
released Smile/Beautiful Dreamer DVD and the new High
School Sweethearts' (Get Hip) CD ("Heels 'n' Wheels").
I then drove through the Hollywood heat 'n' smog
thinking about Garry Winogrand's indelible photograph
of Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles and Brian Wilson's
immeasurable impact on "This Whole World."

By the way out, Domenic fittingly dedicates his latest
book to Greg Shaw.
