[bomp] Animal VIctims of Katrina
For animal lovers, Jahna is right about it being good to give money to the
Lousiana Society For Prevention of Cruelty To Animals(and don't forget the Miss.
SPCA) At least as important is the Humane Society, who was the third group
behind FEMA and the Red Cross to help in this tragedy. They were in Miss, the day
after the hurricane hit. Their teams are moving southward to the harder hit
areas like Gulfport(where 120 cats and dogs were saved) and Biloxi. As the
Louisianna evacuees move into Houston, the Humane Society is helping to set up a
pet friendly shelter and an emergency animal shelter. The Humane Society is
equipped to handle pets and strays, horses, farm animals, and even wild animals.
Thankfully the zoos in these states have weathered the storm well according to
reports. As far as the Aquarium in Gulfport,Miss.,six dolphins were moved
first to hotel pools and then to facilities in Florida. For more info, check the
website which is being updated regularly. I've heard people say the Red Cross
and Humane Society aren't rated very highly in the wise giving guides. Although
it's nice to see people doing their homework, it's hard to argue with the
fact that FEMA-the federal emergency management agency has a pact of cooperation
assuring the Red Cross and the Humane Society that they will be the first
groups allowed in the disaster area. So in the early stages at least, this is
where your money will do the most good. I feel really good about raising money for
the HSUS. Hopefully I'll be able to work with Habitat for Humanity soon. They
lost a lot of their houses in this devastation, but I gotta say the critters
have my heart!!! Nancy Neon
