[bomp] Re: Fuzz zines and current bands?

Greetings!

<< what are your favorite underground garage-psych bands from the past 5
years? Yes, you can say the Hives or White Stripes, etc, but I'm really
looking for more underground bands... (Though in the "aboveground" world
I just saw the Kaiser Chiefs in concert -- and they were fabulous!) >>

MELVIN LITTLE REPLIES: It is amazing when one decides to have a little bit
of vacation time. I've been online all day long, and I guess I better
contribute to this discussion before signing off.

In no particular order (myself), these are bands that came into my attention
since 2000.

New Planet Tampolines: What can I say about them? They sound like Pink
Floyd from the Syd Barrett era (1965-1968). Check them out at
_http://www.newplanettrampoline.com/_ (http://www.newplanettrampoline.com/) .

The Spinns: This is a local Chapel Hill, NC garage band. They were heavily
influenced by The Gonn (and many other bands from the Pebbles series), and
they have an early Rolling Stones (1963-65) sound about them. "The Last Time"
and "Come On" comes to mind when hearing The Spinns. Check out their website
which can be easily accessed at
_http://www.demonbeachrecords.com/spinns.html_ (http://www.demonbeachrecords.com/spinns.html) .

Mondo Topless: They are usually THE BAND I look forward to see playing
almost every year at Sleazefest. There's quite nothing like being loaded with
Long Island Ice Teas and New Castle Beer (in no particular order) than hearing
them live. They can be accessed at _http://www.mondotopless.com/_
(http://www.mondotopless.com/) .

The Young Idea: The best way to describe this trio is that they are Liliput
(a 1970s Swiss punk rock band) meets a 1990s Sleater Kinney. They fuses
punk rock, power pop, 60s garage rock, and 60s UK mod in a very feminist
package. Two females and a guy were tired working in retail like it was claimed in
one of their songs, and they formed last year and move from Maryland down to
Chapel Hill. They can be accessed at _http://www.theyoungidea.com/_
(http://www.theyoungidea.com/) .

The Ugly Beats: I just heard them for the first time a few weeks ago, and I
am going to make the purchase after hearing one MP3 from them. They are from
Austin, TX, and their MP3 is entitled "Can't Cut Through." Check them out
also at _http://www.uglybeats.com_ (http://www.uglybeats.com) .

Cheers,
Melvin Little
