[bomp] Stereolab might be the Chantal Goya of today...
Good Morning!
A couple of days ago, I purchased "Masculine Feminine" (which seems to be a
French mod film) from 1966. It is sort of like the 1965 British film
entitled "The Knack and How To Get It!," and "The Knack and How To Get It!" is one
of my all time favorite films. It is an (almost) similar story line about
young romance in general, but "Masculine Feminie" is a bit artier and a bit more
political than "The Knack." Paul just left the military service, and he
dates a pop star (Madeline) performed by Chantal Goya (who was a pop singer in
real life). Paul befriends a young Communist trade union activist as well.
They work on activism, leafleting, spray painting American military vehicles
shouting "US Go Home!" Paul's relationship with Madeline is topsy turby at
best. In a nutshell, it is a story about young people, birth control,
sexuality, and it was controversial when it came out in 1966.
I watched the movie 8 or 9 times since purchasing it on Friday night. The
movie is literally very noisy. Many of the main characters are walking around
from cafe to cafe drinking expresso and chain smoking filter-less cigarettes
talking about politics and issues relating to the young people of 1965. The
movie is in black and white. There's no English dialogue, so you have to
listen to the French dialogue while reading the subtitles in English. Anyway,
I am getting into the Madeline's music who really is Chantal Goya. When
listening to Madeline/Chantal Goya, I can't help but think of early Stereolab.
When Laetita Sadier sings today, she seems to sing in her style (the
melancholy French). I've seen Stereolab 6 times in the last 10 years, and they are
one of the best "mainstream" acts around today. I actually met Laetita Sadier
in April when Stereolab played at the Cat's Cradle. If and when they come
back to North Carolina (and I get to see Stereolab which I think that I will),
I might ask Laetita Sadier if Chantal Goya is one of her influences?
I've checked as much info as I could find on Chantal Goya. If anyone know
where I can buy some of her CD recordings, please let me know. What's really
funny about this movie "Masculine Feminie" is that I became really interested
when I saw her face on the cover at the video store about a month ago (when
I purchased "Georgy Girl)." I admit it. The attractive face and the jet
black bob haircut of hers caught my attention to look over it. Since buying the
movie, I consider it right up there with "The Knack and How To Get It!"
which I mentioned earlier, "What's New Pussycat?," "Too Sir, With Love," and
"Riot on Sunset Strip."
Cheers,
Melvin Little
