Re: [bomp] The Decline(?) Of The Bomp List

i think the main porblem with the bomp list these days is that it has no unique
niche. when the internet was new, the bomp list was not only a totally unique
source for arcane musical and pop-cultural knowledge, but also a social space
where fans of such material could meet and gather.

nowadays, with the availability of micro-focused online stuff like
allmusic.com, myspace, and even the BLR list, there seems to be less of a place
for the original list.

i says "seems" because i think there is as much of a place for this list now as
there ever was. BLR, as much as i enjoy it, is simply too chatty and busy for
me to keep up with with any regularity. i dig kopper's garagepunk forums, but i
still prefer a simple listserv that brings new messages into my inbox.

i would still easily be as interested in a forum that kept strictly to informed
posts on musical and pop-cultural topics, and the live scene garage/psych scene
across the nation. no slam on the BLR, but that list ain't it. i think it would
take very littel work to bring this list back to life. but the thing is, it
needs to occupy a niche.

let me ask a question - where have the rest of you gone (since the bomp list
has become relatively moribund) for online garage/psych scene info? i would be
as into revitalizing this list as anybody. as long as it's in existence, i'll
be here. i'm willing bet there's a core group of 10-20 people who will NEVER
leave this list: blair, rocky & deena, david, the rev, me....who else is still
out there?

anyway, the bottom line: i think there is still a place for the bomp list. no
other listserv that i know offers the same kind of broad-based and
knowledgeable musical/pol-cultural information. i don't think any other online
resource has ever quite replaced what this list was in 1998-2002ish. if anybody
else is into a sustained effort at bomp CPR, i am more than willing to give it
a go. :)
