<<what you think of this one? I have had an original since the early
70's, but despite all the names, including my pal Robbie Blunt, it never
really stuck with me. It's on Marmalade, so I have kept it anyway.>>
i've had a CDR of this one for a number of years but, to be honest, i think i
listened to it about twice and put it on the shelf. when i heard that a legit
(?) reissue was coming out, i knew i definitely wanted a CD copy - it's
marmalade, and in my book anything on maramlade is worth paying real money for.
marmalade is maybe the last great uncomped label. so much great shit came out
on maramlade in 1967-69: the blossom toes, julie driscoll & brian auger, the
killer frabjoy & runcible spoon single. marmalade is positively SCREAMING for
the box set treatment. i can't believe a marmalade box hasn't come out
already...maybe there are licensing issues?
anyway, the gordon jackson album. i was talking to my buddy jade about this one
the other, and the simiarlity to 68-ish traffic. he said he actually prefers
the jackson LP to the 2nd traffic LP. i can't go quite that far. while the
album has its moments - "my ship, my star" and "song for freedom" are
particular favorites of mine - gordon j's voice is getting a little too far
over into roger chapman territory for my comfort, that warbly operatic "serious
music" voice. also, he doesn't really have much of a gift for writing memorable
songs - certainly nothing on the level of "pearly queen" or "forthy thousand
headmen" fro the aforementioned 2nd LP.
i like the LP...it's OK, but...you know...it's OK. there is an actual
documented liner-note sighting of the rare (these days) "lost classic"
hyperbole...what a cliche. to my ears, this is an OK album, nothing more,
nothing less. not a "lost classic," more like a "lost OK record."
the songs are pretty forgettable but have some nice colorful flourishes added
by chris wood's alto sax. the traffic connection definitely helped on this
record.
what i am REALLY wondering: when will some deep feeling recordings surface??
now THAT would be something i could get really excited about....
