GFR when it comes down to it were just a very loud soul band - the comparisons to the James Gang, Sabbath, etc. weren't really apt. As far as comparing them to other Detroit acts, yes, all those guys had the soul roots, but I wouldn't exactly compare GFR to the Stooges or even MC5. Now if you're talking about Mitch Ryder or Bob Seger, I could definitely see that. There is a definite parallel. Like Ryder and Seger, GFR were great for awhile but got really sucky in the mid seventies
Also you are judging the band by their fans, don't tell me that there weren't idiots who dug the stones?
Any band which reaches a certain level of popularity is going to have some fans who are idiots, although some more than others. For example, IMO there never have been too many lunkhead Kinks fans
