I'll agree that they weren't anywhere nearly as good
as the MC5, but the Rationals would be a pretty good
comparison. However, the Rationals' guitarist (forget
his name) was considerably better than Mark Farner.
GFR's real weakness was Farner's guitar playing
(Farner's lyrics weren't too great either, but that
could be overlooked considering the era/genre. )

Except for Fogerty being a MUCH better songwriter than
Farner, and him and his brother being MUCH better
guitarists. I tend to think that lyrically speaking
Farner was trying to tap into the same sort of blue
collar americana that Fogerty did really well, but not
quite being able to pull it off.
. It was the Coop that I actually dug.

Cooper did open for the Syd Barrett era Floyd at the
Cheetah in Santa Monica. I'd read some article about
Barrett which quoted Glen Buxton as saying that he
thought Barrett was the strangest person he'd ever
met, and the author of the article said that plenty of
people would have said the same about Buxton. Somehow,
though, I don't think Buxton was anywhere nearly as
out there as Syd....
