[bomp] Spring Has Sprung
Finally I've come out of hibernation a little bit. Joe Vig threw a party at
the Kirkland. For me the highlight was the surprise visit from our long time
friend, Robery Barry Francos of FFANZEEN fame. Both Joe and I wrote for Rob's
grr-8 mag. As much fun as it is in Boston right now,I do miss those days with
Rob in NYC. We used to go out almost every night-that was the death throes of
Max's Kansas City, but it was still exciting to a young girl from Greensboro,NC.
NYC was like a big juicy peach to me and I was determined to suck out every
last drop of juice! But with Rob everything was cool, our weekly trip to the Omei
in Chinatown, even distributing his mag-it was odd navigating Manhattan in
Rob's car. And even though I see Robs rarely,I still consider him one of my very
best friends and everytime we see each other 1)he never changes 2)our
friendship never changes and3)it's just like those gaps of time in between our visits
never existed. Paul Hultman's set was a pleasant surprise. He had great
energy and his voice projected despite having no PA. Something about his guitar
style reminded me a bit of Bowie's HUNKY DORY period. But Jon Macey and Steve
Gilligan of Fox Pass were AMAZING! Macey was on acoustic guitar and used a
harmonica rack a la Dylan. Gilligan alternated between a mandolin and a stringed
instrument that look like a lute(but Billy says he was an acoustic bass). You
hear a bit more of Macey's country influence in his acoustic stuff. I definitely
heard tinges of the Everlys. These guys would make a great bill with Barry
and Holly Tashian. The vocal arrangements were clever and these two sounded
beautiful together. I hope they record soon. Oh yeah,I interviewed John Nikolai
who is striking and brilliant. It's a good thing I'm married cos I'd definitely
pounce on him otherwise! Yeow! Artie got super shots of him. THen Artie
kidnapped us to PA's Lounge to see his wife's boyfriend's band-how sophisticated!
THe Glass Set were pretty cool. We ran into Bob "THe Boob" Colby(wow, two fanzine
Bobs in one night-maybe it's an omen-Frenzy and Fanzeen-oh maybe they'll join
forces and call it Frenzeen or Fanzy or maybe not!! ha ha)The Glass Set
sounded European and kinda shoe gaze. It was very atmospheric. I can see these guys
becoming quite popular with the dance club crowd among others. THen there was
TRA LA LA. Now they are right up my alley-like Nikki & The Corvettes with 4
Nikkis but all in very different forms-you've got the tall,blonde-Vegas
showgirl type(or Ginger if you will),then a cute,petite woman(there's your Mary
Anne)-no the others weren't Gilligan or the Skipper, you had the other petite
one, more of the sexy siren, dressed in black, hair in the face type(IF thats a
type)and then you had my fave, the only one whose name I got-STELLA,the rock chick in
a denim skirt, high heeled boots, jet black hair with bangs, but she was
definitely more Lulu Brooks than Betty Page. Though she didn't play the keyboards she
was the Pandora's Melanie(my fave Pandora,of course!! for the millenium.I
strong armed Artie to take some shots of her holding the NOISE and smoking. She
looked SMOLDERING!!! I kid you not folks, this a future star,in fact,I name her
Stella Superstar!!! WE also saw a band called Moon Bats and that was one of the
quirkiest bands,I'd ever seen. The drummer would make an excellent
personaslity for a kid's show. She's very animated and well, quirky is the word. Finally
the night was winding down and we went to Chinatown for another typical
shitty Boston Chinatown meal. Sheesh! I've been here over 5 years now and the best
Chinese food I 've had was in Quincy. Go figure! The only restaurant that I
like in Chi-Town is Malaysian and part of a chain. I usually prefer not to
frequent chain restaurants, but this one-Penang is something special, but when you
are eating at 2 or 3am in Boston, your choices are pretty limited, you've got
IHOP, some Chinese joints, or the tachitos at 7-11. Don't get me started on Boston
though for a world class city,it certainly has some backward ass
drawbacks(don't even let me start on the mass transit system- I might get homicidal!!!)
Dog shit, lung oysters,and barf all over the streets(how quaint!)and here's a
pet peeve, people that won't get in A line, but kinda straddle all the lines..when
did this start? Enough of my bitching, last night was a blast, but I definitely
could have used that extra hour of sleep! Cheers, Nancy Neon PS Anyone else
like TRALA LA from Brooklyn?
