You said in a previous post that "Someone out there actually liked "Walk
The Line" (presumably someone with little knowledge of Johnny Cash)". I
thought you were talking about the historical accuracy. I guess I
misinterpreted what you meant.
Historical accuracy is one thing and I would've accepted the historical inaccuracy of Walk The Line if Phoenix had been able to make the viewer of the film believe that he was Cash or even attempted a semblance of trying to recreate Cash. However, Phoenix never made me believe for a second that he was Cash - unlike Jamie Foxx in Ray or Val Kilmer in The Doors. For that matter, even Kevin Spacey's performance as Bobby Darin captured the mannerisms and the essence of the character better than Phoenix did with Cash. The guy who played Elvis in "Walk The Line" was even worse - otoh Waylon Payne's performance as Jerry Lee Lewis in Walk The Line was quite good, he did capture Jerry Lee's personality and mannerisms quite well.

When I heard a Cash biopic was going to be made, I was thinking that it
would be very tough for *anyone* to portray Cash.
True, and I don't know if anyone could have even done a 10% convincing job as Cash.
