[bomp] what's their problem? self-absorbtion, perhaps?
i totally do not understand people like that...good music, the best music, is
suggestive of its time, but not absolutely rooted in it. the remains exemplify
the timeless, 100% real core at the heart of all great rock & roll. chuck
berry, the dead boys, the beatles, whatever...
Rob,
That's just it; these people HATE punk rock, you know. Because it overturns
everything THEY represent. The notion that you'd put the Dead Boys in the
same sentence as Chuck Berry and the Beatles would elicit huge condescending
laughter in their ranks... ultimately, becuase the Dead Boys never had a top ten
record, let alone a top ten record when they were growing up. See to them, the
measures of succcess lie not in the music, but in the countable dollars it
added up to for whoever profited. To them, music is like Sports, no different;
there are winners and losers, and it's all about who wins the competition.
I gotta tell you, as a music book author, I'm supposed to have all those Joel
Whitburn BILLBOARD books around, but I intentionally don't keep them handy so
I won't rely on thinking like these people. If I need BILLBOARD info, I rely
on calling someone who has the the book, that way, reference to a records
success remains low on my totem pole when discussing MUSIC, and those stats don't
define my conversation. I'd rather not be Ross Porter (perhaps only Brent
will get that reference, but it's worth it, Brent)
Besides, I'd rather call my collector pal and find out how it charted on
KRLA, KFWB, KHJ or KBLA if I'm gonna stoop to chart position reliance. Fact;
Them's "Baby Please Don't Go" b/w "Gloria" was #1 on KRLA on April 4-10, April
11-17 and April 18-24 (three weeks)... and #1 on KFWB April 10-17 and April
17-24... So shoot me.
