[bomp] re: oasis/britpop
i agree about britpop with the exception of the La's. i don't understand
how a band that great didn't become huge overnight sensations worldwide.
maybe (probably) there's other really great britpop stuff i just haven't
heard. and yeah, compared to the La's, oasis really does come off as lowest
common denominator. i get the feeling that if there was a british version
of hot topic stores in the UK they'd be chock full of oasis stuff the same
way hot topic stores in malls here are loaded with good charlotte
merchandise.
i do find oasis to be highly entertaining. like emperors who have no
clothes -- fans/press treat them like they're the stones and they've
completely bought into it. it does bug me that people compare them to the
kinks, small faces and other great earlier bands. ultimately, to me, oasis
is the british equivalent of guns n roses. average sounding AOR band that
inexplicably ends up held in the same regard as bands who really were great.
