Another note on this...The Highs In The Mid 80s podcast episodes are
meant to address this. I've been wanting someone to do a Highs in the
Mid-80s comp series for at least 10 years. Since nobody's done that,
I've decided these podcasts will have to suffice. The first NYC episode
is at http://www.garagepunk.com/?p=188
As I mentioned, the first LI episode will also be available soon. I'll
be doing another NYC episode, and probably a second Long Island version
(unless I just make the first one longer than normal.) I'll likely try
and do one for NJ, PA, and either Rochester or Rochester/Buffalo.
For everything else, well...I'd really prefer it if I didn't do all the
Highs stuff myself. I'd prefer these to come from someone who was
actually a part of each scene. I know, I wasn't in all the
aforementioned places. OK, I *was* on Long Island, hung out a good deal
in NYC, and went to school in Rochester. I moved to NJ in '87. And I
drove out to PA quite a bit in '88 and '89, so I got to know a fair
amount of that stuff, in addition to getting to know a bunch of the PA
crowd through their trips to NYC. (Of course, if there's a native NJ or
PA type on this list who would like to do those, I'd be happy to hand
over the reins on those episodes, or even co-produce them.)
If there's *anyone* out there who wants to do a Highs in the Mid-80s
podcast from their local scene - Boston, I'd think, should rate a few
on its own - please get in touch. Again, if you don't want to be on mic
or don't know how to put this stuff together, I'll put it together if
you'll supply the sounds and the info. Info? Well, I tend to like to
write liner notes. (See the aforementioned NY episode.)
Oh...The question has come up of whether I expect this stuff to be pure
60s-styled stuff or...What? Well, that's a toughie. With the NYC
scene, I concentrated on stuff that had a "purer" 60s influence. With
Long Island, well...Some of it's just plain rock'n'roll. I'm honestly
not sure I'd ever want to try and pigeonhole a band like the Plastic
Device. (Listen to "Helen of Troy" at the entry for the Plastic Device
by going to web.mac.com/blairb/ and clicking on the Plastic Device entry
at the bottom.)
