[bomp] Smile All The While
<<< If Michael knows the song, he's also intimately familiar with all nine
re-mixes >>>
That's what Mike Fornatale said about me in the promotional blurb for the
first few Shaw Nuff gigs...But this morning I was thrown by something I'd never
heard before.
A co-worker had the Long Island oldies station on, and they were playing
"Smile A Little Smile For Me" by The Flying Machine...which was surprising since
they, like a lot of oldies stations, seemed to have chopped down their
playlist to "Only oldies that *everybody* knows"...You know, "My Girl," "Get
Together," "Satisfaction."
But no matter, as I've always liked this song a lot. It may be a little too
much on the pop side for some, but I like it. Anyway, *every* time I've heard
this record in the twenty or so years I've known about it, there was a
keyboard after the second chorus playing the melody for a few bars, and I always
liked this part because it sounds exactly like this real cheapo toy keyboard a
friend of mine had when we were kids...and I can't help but think of that
thing whenever I hear that part of "Smile A Little Smile For Me."...And just
before that part of the record came up this morning, I said to the co-worker,
"I love this bit, with the really corny keyboard."
Except...it didn't come up. Over the bars where it would have been, there
was instead the singers going "Ba ba ba ba, ba ba....." to the melody.
I've *never* heard that before. I have that song on a few comps, but it's
always the one with the keyboard. Where did that come from? Which one was the
actual "hit single" version?
