[bomp] roky erickson related...

I hear ya Joe. It's great that Roky's back to some
semblance of good health. I just wish I had the
opportunity to see him, but Sydney's a long way from
Austin. I've actually been listening to a few of the
Roky CD Club (a Google Group that circulate some great
Roky/Elevators boots & OOP stuff for those who don't
know) issues in recent times. One of my all-time
favourites. Long may he run...

<my buddy just called me from his cell at a dive bar
here in austin
(shoal
creek saloon). some old dude celebrating a b.d. and
the place is
packed w/
old musicians from around town. roky was in
attendance, and jumped
onstage
to join the band for starry eyes -- i got to hear the
second half thru
the
cell. sounded great.

in early march of this year as the sun was going down
on a tuesday
night i
raced from work to a kids' music school (where they
teach kids roky's
tunes,
among others) and got to catch a set with Roky singing
about a half
dozen
tunes. he went on right after a bunch of 12 year olds
tried to make
their
way through pinball wizard. (surreal to see Roky
follow this!) a
little
shaky on a couple of songs but when he sang starry
eyes it was
transcendent.
actually, it was downright scary. i had goose bumps
and even started
to
tear up.

no real point to any of this, except maybe that even
though it's
11.30pm and
still 90 degrees, austin TX is the fucking coolest
place in the
universe.
and that while there have been a lot of great rock n
roll singers
through
the years, there will never be a better rock n roll
singer than roky
erickson. and that starry eyes has to be the most
achingly beautiful
song
ever written.

two alone in the dark, may it be......
