[bomp] Regents Philbin
About The Regents' 45 of "Words," Domenic sez...
<<< Is this single on Reprise? Because I know the Regents who were the
house band at It's Boss on Sunset Strip during 1965/1966 were to have recorded
for the label (I read this in a small publication put out by the club). >>>
The "Words/Worryin' Kind" 45 was on Penthouse in America and CBS in the
UK...The 'Fuzz Acid and Flowers' discography does have a Reprise single (0430),
in 1965: "When I Die, Don't You Cry"/"She's Got Her Own Way Of Lovin'"...so
'FA&F' is presenting these two singles and some others as all being by the same
Regents.
However...
<<< I know that particular Regents group also released a house band album
from another, very short-lived club called Jack Martin's A.M.-P.M. on Capitol
Records produced by David Axelrod (who I interviewed... about that LP). >>>
'FA&F' has that LP, 'Live At The AM/PM Discotheque' (Capitol KAO 2153) under
a *different* Regents...for whom all they have to say is "An early sixties
rock quintet with sax, recorded live." So, if that album is, as you say, the
same group that did the Reprise 45, I'll have to assume 'FA&F' isn't 100
percent certain on which Regents is which and therefore take any of their Regents
info with a little salt.
While I was writing this, I got an offlist reply that The Regents who did
"Words" were the same Regents who backed British singer Buddy Britten.
In case anyone is wondering why I seem to be obsessing over this...well,
quite simply, I do a podcast of British Invasion music (and British
*non*-invaders of the same era) and I would like to play "Words," but I want to make sure
it's British before I do. I may just play it anyway and explain what's up.
