Yes, The Leaves did it before the Monkees. I don't know precisely when in  
1966 The Leaves' LP was released, but it hit the charts in late July  1966, and 
the first Monkees recording of 'Words' (that alternate version that  was in a 
late first season episode but not officially issued until 1990)  wasn't made 
until the end of August.
