[bomp] R.I.P.

Nah, sorry, it's nobody you'd know. But he and I grew up together, he lived
right across the street from me. He was a year older than me, larger than
life, and seemingly indestructible.

EGLESTON - David James died Monday, October 2, at St. Joseph's Medical Center
after a short illness. Born August 3, 1953 and raised in New Jersey, David
was a resident of the Seattle/Tacoma area since 1978.
--------------------------------------
Anyway -- I got my first tape recorder, a 7" reel-to-reel, for Xmas 1966. I
was 12 years old, Dave was 13. And I picked up a plastic Emenee guitar that
my sister had gotten for that same Xmas, and discarded...tuned it to something
that sounded like an open chord, since I didn't know any better, and held it
across my lap, barred the chords with my thumb, and played it using a quarter
as a pick.

Later on I figured out that I could put a little mic inside one of the
F-holes, plug that mic into Dave's tape recorder, turn the record-level all the way
up, and have an "electric guitar" -- while recording the whole thing with
another mic and my own tape recorder. He sang, I played, and we made up most of
the songs as we went along. Seriously. Lyrics just popped out of his head.

Anyway...if not for Dave, I probably never would have picked that guitar up.

Do I still have any of the tapes? Did you really have to ask me that? ;)

There are some unfortunate edits and overdubs, added later, but you can hear
through them. This is from late '67, I think...
