I always thought that the version of "Susan" without the psychedelic interlude was done by radio stations...I have the 45 and IIRC, that weird midsection was right in there. Haven't played it in a while, but I'm almost sure it's there.
 
(BTW, I've noticed that psychy interludes and slow-moving intros do NOT fare well on modern oldies stations...lately I've been hearing Diana Ross & the Supremes'"Reflections" without the Moog-ish beginning, and although it's not psychedelic at all, Joe South's lowdown guitar intro on Aretha Franklin's "Chain Of Fools" has been edited out as well...when it turns up on the radio, it now starts cold with Aretha going "chain, chain, chain...".)
