Joe has a point, the truly (and deservedly) legendary barbecue joints are in little towns outside Austin. And well worth the drive if you have the time for it.
But Joe's been living in Texas, like, forever. So he's a little spoiled.
Having sampled the so-called bbq throughout most of the southeast, I'm gonna' dissent a little here. Stubb's, Iron Works, Ruby's (NOT Rudy's)...those are some Austin BBQ joints that you can hit easily from SXSW and they're waaaay better than anything I ever got in Memphis or anywhere else outside of Texas.
You definitely wanna' avoid the strip mall shit like Po-Kee-Joe's and Bill Miller. I'm with Mr Emery 1000% there, those places are lame and there's a bunch of 'em. I also think County Line and Salt Lick are quite overrated but some would disagree.
Bottom line: If you're visiting from some part of the world where the best barbecue says "KC Masterpiece" on the bag, you can do real well for yourself in Austin.

ps. Lee - I hate to tell you this but to get REAL bbq you'll need to drive
a ways. lockhart, luling, marble falls, llano. don't let any knuckleheads
try to tell you there's good bbq in the city limits. some passable places,
but if you want mind blowing bbq you're gonna need to get in the car and
drive (45 minutes minimum). it's worth it though. email me off-list if you
want some recommendations. the thing to remember -- if they give you a fork
to eat it with, you're probably not at the right place.
