Well sure, I'm well aware that there were diet colas at that time. It was
the mention of "Diet Coke" that I found amusing.
My mom used to drink Diet Rite in the mid-60s. It tasted like two parts
Coke, two parts seltzer and one part Windex.
TAB, on the other hand, was utterly foul. In the mid-70s, I forcibly weaned
myself off of sugary sodas (which was pretty much all I drank) and TAB was
nearly the only game in town.
When Bob Goldthwait started his stand-up career, he always had a can of TAB
with him onstage. At some point in his act, he'd take a hit from it and then
say "This has the exact same ingredients as a battery."
