So true Bob.
I can sort of understand and accept how things happened in the '60s.
But why didn't kids go for punk in the '70s will baffle me forever. Mostly they wanted Deep Purple and Eric Clapton.
I was 17 in 1977 (AND I STILL AM!) and when I heard '60s Who after listening to their current stuff, I started to realize where it was at. It took me a while to catch onto the charms of the Dictators [although some --well, 2---of my friends were into 'em].
Ramones were on a major label with great and demented songs.
Everyone who played real rock n roll got nothing. Modern Lovers, Flamin' Groovies, NRBQ, Big Star, Fleshtones, Lyres, Untamed Youth right up to the Swingin' Neckbreakers.

Most people on this list seem to recognize that the Heartbreakers and the Buzzcocks *should've* had top 40 hits. While Sister Sledge should've drowned in their own manure.
So of course our "second guessing of history" is somewhat slanted.
In the end, I think it's a fucking miracle whenever something I really like becomes a hit record. If that makes the Beatles, Stones, Kinks,, Official Historical Miracles---that's cool with me.

Maybe they 'd be as well remembered as Johnny Kidd & the Pirates.
Maybe bands that dressed like hooligans would gotten a shot.
Cleaning up was a brillian idea. Of course, the songs and the skills would still be there.
2nd guessing history is so tricky!
Why did a band with everything like Barry & the Remains or the Bobby Fuller 4 (or the Pretty Things) not do better? I 've always thought there was just so much going on: Dylan, Beatles, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones and then brain freeze sets in.
