Very true. The quality of his recordings had been
going up even before the comeback special, e.g. "Big
Boss Man" and "US Male" - those were recorded in '67
but released in '68. Elvis must have sensed the poor
quality of most of his mid sixties work and gotten a
clue even before the TV special....
Also, and importantly, after all those years of making rushed trips to the
recording studios between his hectic movie shooting schedule, to quickly apply
vocals to hastily-recorded backing tracks of lame songs written for the
films, those early 1969 sessions (by which time his movie career was just about
winding down) were the first time in years Elvis had ample time to really work
with his musicians and producers on finding the right songs, and the right
approach/arrangements for the songs, and put proper thought and care into the
records he was releasing.
