Dear bomp list:
It would be refreshing to see people discuss Brett's
book and agree or disagree with criticism by utilizing
his book. This helps Brett, this keeps things
focused, attacking the messenger reminds me of a young
lady in New York waiting to get back to Boston. She is
in the military. She made a condescending remark
about Michael Moore.
I asked "Did you see the movie?"
She said "I don't have to - it's Michael Moore."
There you have it. I felt badly that this young lady
couldn't wait to be shipped off to Iraq - she said it
was "a buddy thing" to be with the other soldiers.
The bigger picture just was beyond her thought
process.
Those of us who have documented the Boston scene for
close to forty years invite discussion. All I see is
attacks on the messenger. Is it not true that the
Bomp list shut down due to a power outage in
California or something? I was blamed for that!
Amazing - people said I have magic powers but, trust
me, I didn't shut down the Bomp List. I complained
about a posting and it was removed. The power to stop
internet programs, power grids and Agent Smith have
not yet been granted to me.
That being said - discussing Brett's book after
reading it would be more advantageous to this group,
to Brett, and to Boston Rock & Roll in general.
If you want to "bash the Count", well, it only proves
my point - you don't want to discuss Brett's work.
I will discuss it. On my television show we've had
authors who do what is called "historical fiction".
Brett hasn't over-reached THAT far, but his work so
blatantly disregards important area artists -
THE FIFTH ESTATE as Exhibit A - that it is like
writing about World War II and not mentioning Winston
Churchill, the Atomic Bomb and other key components of
that battle.
There are quite a few people writing me about the
ommissions - where is Tim Doherty's story other than a
mention or two of Lou Miami & The Kozmetics (heck,
the night Bobby's drummer came home with me is
classic, but what the hell:
Vig: "Are you dating him?"
Lou: "He goes where he wants to go."
Vig: "OK, Bobby, come with me
Lou: jaw drops as drummer vanishes into the night with
Le Compte...
OK, ha ha...it was pretty innocent as Bobby & I were
friends, but these kind of anecdotes would make the
book interesting. Not that Brett has to go there (and
watch people focus on that story and not the theme
here...that certain areas of the scene were not
addressed - specifically - how much fun Lou Miami's
nights were, or the KILL OR BE KILLED SLAM DANCE
nights that I created at Cantones which had lines
around the corner, and which moved to THE PARADISE in
the summer of 1985 and had lines around the corner.
hardcore like SSD Control, the heavy metal band MASS,
they are all important parts of the fabric of Boston
music that need to be addressed in great detail.
It's my opinion. Please read Brett's book and then
discuss it. But by attacking the messenger I win the
argument by default so if you want to shoot arrows at
a legitimate opinion by someone who was there, you
make yourself look silly.
best
