<<I must say I'll still sooner put on Kaleidoscope...>>
weird...as fixated on UK psych as i am (and i am, and i am), i have just never been able to get into these guys too much. there's an early a (or b, can't remember) side called "holiday maker" that i really like, but that's more or less it. the second BTs album takes some getting used to, but that first one....damn. that's a gin-yoo-wahn desert island record for me. not everything is drop-dead brilliant, i could easily go another 4 or 5 billion years without hearing that annoying "frozen dog" song again, but the stuff that's good is SO good...songs like "mr watchmaker," "love is," and (especially) "telegram tuesday" are just flawless, 100% brick-house perfect songs.
the BBC stuff on the sunbeam discs is epsecially good - all the poli palmer-era stuff, the mellotron-and-vibes arrangements of "mr watchmaker" and "love is" are just gorgeous, sort of like "magical mystery tour" meets "edwin garvey"-era manfred mann.
i still think the LP tracks sound better on the early 90s japanese CDs (and the late 90s - ahem - "canadian imports" sourced from them) sound better, but as far as bang for buck, you can't argue with the sunbeam discs. definitiely must-own stuff for anybody into UK psych.
